Prayer Request: On Separating Children from Parents

The separating of children from their parents at the U.S. / Mexico border by agents of the United States government is deplorable. Granted, persons wishing to enter the country must follow the established procedures and comply with all applicable laws but the law does not require that children be torn from their parents arms at the point of an illegal entry. This policy is the antithesis of the principles of justice and compassion that are foundational to values of American society. The government is responsible for ensuring the well-being of the innocent children who are suffering as a result of this manufactured crisis.

It is despicable that these children are being used as pawns to promote a political agenda. Congress has been casting about for several years attempting to come together and craft meaningful, comprehensive legislation to codify the much-needed reforms to the immigration policy. To try forcing through change in a few days is unreasonable at best and blackmail at the worst.

The attempt by the Attorney General to use Romans 13 to justify ripping a baby from its mother’s breast is an abomination. His “exegesis” is based on a flawed hermeneutic and indicates no understanding on his part of the context in which Paul’s message in that passage of Scripture is given.

Jesus was very clear in his instructions regarding children “Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:13-15 NIV) I’m reminded of a song we sang during Vacation Bible School when I was a child at Pine Street Christian Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma: “Jesus loves the little children, all children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.” Neither we nor our government can do anything less. Please pray for everyone involved at every level of government. Save the children.
